U2's San Diego setlist, 22/09/17

Today U2 performed their 27th and last US show for the Joshua Tree Tour (counting the Bonnaroo set; not counting the cancelled St Louis show). This gig was in San Diego, the only Californian show of this leg. The only other time U2 have ever played just one Californian show on a leg was on the 2009 jaunt through North America. All other North American legs have either featured two or more Californian shows, or none whatsoever.

U2 haven't performed in San Diego for over twelve years. Their most recent shows in the city were the two that began the Vertigo Tour on 28 and 30 March 2005.

When this gig was announced, the venue was called Qualcomm Stadium. It has since been renamed SDCCU Stadium for its new sponsor, San Diego County Credit Union. U2 have played two previous stadium gigs in San Diego, both at this venue when it was known as Jack Murphy Stadium: 10 November 1992 and 28 April 1997.

Today's soundcheck featured New Year's Day and a song that has not been performed for a couple of weeks, Mysterious Ways. New Year’s Day, as usual, appeared in the setlist but Mysterious Ways did not make a return.

There was a surprise in the set though: You’re the Best Thing About Me was performed in acoustic style. Bono explained at the end that the band did this because the woman who inspired the song, his wife Ali, was in attendance and he wanted to sing the song directly to her.

Also in the setlist tonight was Miss Sarajevo for just the second time this leg. Its only previous performance on the third leg was three days ago in Phoenix. In that city Bono modified the snippet of Drowning Man at the end of One to be a tribute to Mexico after the recent devastating earthquakes; he did the same tonight.

The band now have a bit of a break before resuming the current leg in Mexico City on 3 October. At the moment, despite the earthquake, the Mexican concerts are expected to go ahead.
