U2 announce European tour dates for 2018

Today, U2 have announced tour dates for Europe in 2018, representing the second leg of the Experience + Innocence Tour. It begins at the end of August, two months after the end of the North American leg, and runs through to late October, featuring twelve shows in eleven cities in eight countries.

The dates are:

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday 26 January, except for Copenhagen, which goes on sale on Monday 29 January. There will be U2.com subscriber presales for all venues starting at 10am (venue local time), Thursday 18 January for eXPERIENCE group members; iNNOCENCE group can access presales from 10am, Friday 19 January, with the presales closing for all groups at 5pm on Saturday, 20 January. Keep an eye on your emails for subscriber presale info.

You will note that Paris and Milan are the only cities to have two dates included in the announcement. It is a safe bet, however, that most of these cities will get multiple shows, if justified by the volume of ticket sales—there is room for at least one extra show in each city (allowing for U2's preference of two nights off after playing two nights in a row).

U2 are no stranger to any of these countries, nor to most of these cities. The one that sticks out is Hamburg; the last time U2 performed in Germany's second-largest city was 28 January 1985.

This tour will feature U2's first arena concert anywhere in Portugal. All previous shows have been stadium headline gigs or, back on 3 August 1982, an outdoor festival. Their most recent show in Portugal was in Coimbra on 3 October 2010; their last show in Lisbon was 14 August 2005.

U2 also haven't been to Denmark since the 360 Tour, with the most recent show in Horsens on 16 August 2010. They haven't visited the Danish capital since 31 July 2005. It appears this will be U2's only Scandinavian city of the current tour, having visited Sweden in 2015 on the IE Tour. That means Finland misses out on any IE/EI Tour action entirely, while Norway hasn't seen the band since 2005.

As for Madrid, Milan and Manchester, these are their first concerts for some time. U2 last played Madrid on 11 August 2005. Milan was last played on 8 July 2009, and this is the first arena show in the city since 22 May 1992. And Manchester gets its first U2 gig since 15 June 2005.

All the other cities on the schedule featured in either U2's 2015 or 2017 itinerary, or both in the cases of Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and London.

And no, your eyes do not deceive you: there are no Irish dates in the announcement. But U2.com have indicated that dates in Belfast and Dublin are in the works and will be announced later.
