U2's Boston #2 setlist, 21/09

U2 today performed their second show in the Boston area, at Gillette Stadium in nearby Foxboro. In the afternoon, they performed a soundcheck. After the intro music was checked, the band played Magnificent, Your Blue Room, and Beautiful Day. Bono was heard to remark that he liked the transition from Your Blue Room to Beautiful Day.

Snow Patrol played their last opening set for U2 this year. U2's crew surprised the band by joining them on stage during Shut Your Eyes, and gifted frontman Gary Lightbody a white feathered boa.

When U2 began their set, they opened with a different song for the first time on the 360° Tour: instead of Breathe, first was Magnificent. When the band began rehearsals back in Barcelona in June, they trialled the intro music with Magnificent, but then switched to Breathe and had not given Magnificent a chance to open a show until today. As it happened, Breathe was not played at all today, missing a gig for the first time. The second and third songs were No Line On The Horizon and Get On Your Boots as usual, but then U2 broke with their opening barrage of four new songs and played Mysterious Ways in fourth place.

Your Blue Room was played for the third time ever and led into Beautiful Day, played later in the set than at any previous 360° Tour show. During the intro of City Of Blinding Lights, Bono included a brief snippet of a Mofo lyric, "still looking for the face I had before the world was made". Although soundchecked in late 2005, this is the first time Mofo has made any sort of appearance during a U2 gig since the end of Popmart on 21 March 1998. It is also the first time any Pop song has made any sort of appearance on the 360° Tour, although If God Will Send His Angels was rehearsed prior to the tour starting. Now every U2 album has been referenced in some form at a 360° Tour gig. Speaking of which, Boy got a rare tour reference today when Stories For Boys was snippeted in Vertigo, harking back to the first few months of the Vertigo Tour when such a snippet was commonplace.
