Bono Performs In New York City

With a new U2 album and tour potentially on the horizon, Bono has been on the road recently. Last month, he took to the stage at a party outside Coachella and paid homage to Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas and he's at it again this month.

This past Monday, Bono appeared at the Robin Hood Foundation's 25th anniversary gala at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City alongside Mary J. Blige. They performed just two songs, beginning (unexpectedly) with Moment of Surrender and ending with One, a song the duo has performed together a handful of times dating back to the Vertigo Tour.

The videos of each song can be found below, and to summarize, Bono appears to be fine form vocally. The backing house band supported Bono and Blige on both songs, with Bono playing an acoustic guitar during One. One was expected, but as for Moment of Surrender, it was the first performance of the song by a member of U2 since the 360 Tour's final concert in 2011, so it's nice to see that it hasn't been forgotten about. It will be interesting to see if it remains in the setlist when U2 hits the road once again.

News Regarding U2's Next Album and Tour

The down time between the conclusion of one tour and the flurry of action concerning a new album's release always seems to drag on. Unfortunately, U2 fans know that all too well. But this current quiet period U2 has embraced may soon be coming to an end. Over the last few months, minor tidbits of information has leaked out regarding the near future of U2, when it comes to both a new album as well as a new tour.

It has been nearly 21 months since The Claw was disassembled for the final time on the historic 360 Tour in Moncton, so it's about time we have another U2 tour to get excited about. Let's recap what we have heard thus far.

The Road to Sarajevo: Part One – Bosnia and Bill Carter

On 23 September 1997, U2 performed for the first – and as of this date, only – time in the city of Sarajevo. It was a concert that was typical of the PopMart Tour; and yet it was also a concert the likes of which has not been played since. U2’s history with the city is a long one, with the seeds being planted as far back as the Zoo TV Tour during the breakout of the Bosnian War. 2012 marked the fifteenth anniversary of U2’s concert in Sarajevo, and although this article is a couple of weeks late for the exact anniversary we’d still like to celebrate this landmark event in U2’s history with this multi-part look back at what you may, and may not, have known about the road to Sarajevo.

Bono, Edge, and A Decade of Difference

Tonight, Bono and The Edge performed at A Decade Of Difference, a concert held to celebrate ten years of the William J. Clinton Foundation. Bono and The Edge have had a lengthy relationship with former US President Bill Clinton. They first met him during the Zoo TV tour, and in the time since then Bono and Clinton have met multiple times for philanthropic purposes. On 18 November 2004, they performed at the dedication ceremony for the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Library, playing Rain, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and The Hands That Built America to a crowd of thousands in the rain.

Before his set with The Edge began, Bono joined K'Naan on stage for one song, dueting with him on his brand new song, Bulletproof Pride. Our database entry for this appearance is separate to that for Bono and Edge's set and can be found here.

Bono and The Edge were the final act on stage, introduced by Bill and Chelsea Clinton. The set contained two massive surprises: The first was the debut live performance of A Man And A Woman, dedicated to Chelsea and her husband Marc Mezvinsky. It is almost exactly seven years since that song was released on How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. The second was a surprise performance of Staring At The Sun, not played since 24 October 2001. It is the first time any song from Pop has been performed in full live since Discotheque was played on 20 September 2005. Staring At The Sun was backed by a string section, as were One and Miss Sarajevo.

The full set was as follows:

U2Gigs podcast now available!

After many editing delays, the first U2Gigs.com podcast is finally available! After the conclusion of the 360 Tour in Moncton, Axver and Matkin sat down to talk about their perspectives on the evolution of the tour. They spoke for so long, in fact, that it had to split it into two parts! (Part Two is coming soon).

In part one of our 360 Tour introspective, we take a look at what was, and what might have been. How did the setlist evolve along the tour? How diverse was it? What was missing, and what almost blew the colective fan community's mind? Of course, a conversation between Ax and Matkin (infamous for talking to each other on the U2Gigs Twitter account) wouldn't be a proper conversation without going off-topic once or twice (or thrice. Or whatever the next in line is; fourice?) - we'll compare this tour to the highlights of U2's past, talk about potential remasters (Achtung not included), and even take a look back to Boy and U2 3 Tours!

We hope that you enjoy our first podcast; stay tuned for part two! We'd love to hear your feedback, so please feel free to tell us what you think in the comments section below!

Download the podcast here on iTunes!
Bono sings in Cape Town

Today Bono was in Cape Town with Archbishop Desmond Tutu for the release of Tutu's new book. At the event Bono gave a speech and sang I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, with local musicians and singers acting as his backing band. Tutu, who turns 80 tomorrow, has had a lengthy relationship with U2. A rant about apartheid in Africa was immortalized in the live version of Silver and Gold on Rattle and Hum, and a video speech by Tutu on the One Campaign was aired during the first encore on most nights of the 360 tour, preceeding both Where the Streets Have No Name and One.

Stump Ax: the first batch of answers

Thank you to everybody who set me questions in our Stump Ax contest. Some of these have been easy, but as you'll see, others were pretty difficult and a couple of you can claim to have stumped me. Most questions were answered off the top of my head; on a few occasions I consulted the database where I felt such use was legitimate - in all cases, I have stated that I did this. Hyperlinks were added after answering.

This article contains answers to questions from fifteen people, selected for me by Matkin. If your question does not appear here, that doesn't mean I won't answer it; there were many more good questions and I will do a second batch of answers in a few days. Please do NOT leave new questions in the comments section of this article - given the positive response, we will run a tournament like this again, so hold on to your question until then. But if one of my answers is in error or if the answer is unclear, by all means point it out.

Thank you from U2gigs

This article is written by Axver, but I am sure that the other members of the U2gigs crew, Macphisto (Matthias) and Matkin, echo my sentiments.

Now that the Moncton show has concluded the tour (Moncton setlist here), I would just like to thank everybody who has joined us for the ride that was the 360° Tour. The last two-and-a-bit years have been nothing like what we ever expected. We're a bit older, a bit wiser, and the staffing on U2gigs has grown by a whole third. We never could have done it without all of you, our visitors. You have contributed so much, tipping us off to all manner of news, snippets, and corrections. There are so many people I would like to thank, both fellow fan sites and individuals, that I cannot even begin to name all of you.
U2's Moncton setlist, 30/07

Tonight, U2 performed in Moncton, New Brunswick, playing the final concert of the U2 360° tour. This was the final date announced, displacing Pittsburgh as the last concert of the tour when it was added to the itinerary on 31 January 2011. It was the first time U2 have played Atlantic Canada; or anywhere in Canada further east than Montreal. It was also the first time ever that U2 have concluded a tour in Canada, and the first time since the PopMart tour that a tour has ended outside of the United States. This show brought the grand total of 360° Tour concerts in Canada to nine, equalling the record of the Elevation and Vertigo tours. However, those two tours were played entirely in Canadian arenas while all 360° shows have been in stadiums, thus this is U2's biggest Canadian tour of all time. PopMart was previously the largest stadium-only tour of Canada, with seven shows.

The crew soundchecked Zooropa, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, Moment of Surrender, Even Better Than the Real Thing, and a portion of Get on Your Boots.

The setlist itself stuck to the usual template, but had a few bonuses for the occasion. At the end of I Still Haven't Found, Bono added a snippet of Springhill Mining Disaster, a song U2 used to play live with lyrics naturally based in Springhill, a town in Nova Scotia (a province U2 have never performed in) just 74 kilometres away from Moncton. Then at the end of the show, U2 kept going past Moment Of Surrender; it was followed by Out Of Control. This means that Moncton got a very rare setlist with both I Will Follow and Out Of Control; since Out Of Control's live resurrection in May 2001, the amount of times these two particular Boy songs have appeared at the same show can be counted on one hand.

However, Out Of Control was not the end of proceedings. After Bono sprayed the crowd with champagne, U2 went into 40. This is, amazingly enough, the song's tour debut, having last been performed in full on 20 February 2006 on the Vertigo Tour. This is the first time an original U2 song has ever made its tour debut at the last show of the tour, let alone as the last song of the tour. Larry was left alone as the last band member on stage at the end of 40, and with his final drum beats, the 360° Tour came to a close, two years and one month after it began in Barcelona on 30 June 2009.

The full Moncton setlist was:

Stump Ax!

It may be the end of the 360° Tour tonight, but that need not be the end of our fun. A recent theme over on the U2gigs Twitter account has been the attempt by a few individuals to ask our setlistorian, Axver, a U2 trivia question he cannot answer. So we've decided to turn this into a a competition: Stump Ax.

Basically, here's the drill. Leave us a question relating to U2 setlist trivia by posting it in a comment reply to this article. Do NOT send us questions by any other method, such as Twitter, e-mail, carrier pigeon, interpetive dance, or a banner at the Moncton gig. Well, we may just accept questions by carrier pigeon since it would also make for a tasty dinner, but don't push your luck. Ax promises not to look at this article's comments; Matkin will select the best questions and pose them to Ax. Make sure you post your question by 4 August at midnight Australian eastern time/2pm UTC/10am Canadian eastern time. Axver will attempt to answer the questions on 5 August, Australian eastern time (evening of the 4th for those of you in North America).

Your question can pertain to any aspect of U2 setlist trivia. Do not ask questions about U2's studio discography (Ax has no idea how many editions of the Mysterious Ways single there are or which has the longest tracklist). Do not ask questions about U2's personal life or other off-stage history (Ax frankly has no interest in the band outside of their music and couldn't care less how many cars Bono has owned/crashed or what colour Edge's lounge is painted). In other words, we're looking for questions like "what song has had the most different snippets?" (Beautiful Day, 69 different snippets and counting), not "what shirt was Adam wearing at the 2006-11-10, Sydney show?"

Unless you ask us to credit you otherwise, we will credit you by the name attached to your comment on this article. Since we're poor, we apologise that there are no prizes except for the pride of successfully stumping Ax.

Good luck! Can you stump Ax?

U2's Pittsburgh setlist, 26/07

Today, U2 performed the penultimate show of the 360° Tour (and last US show) in Pittsburgh. This show was not in the original itinerary for 2010, and was added only after the tour was rescheduled. It was announced on 12 October 2010, displacing Minneapolis as the last gig; it, however, also lost the "last gig" status on 31 January 2011 when Moncton was added to conclude the tour.

The setlist was not significantly different to that performed in Minneapolis three days ago, but it did feature two notable changes. One of these was not tremendously surprising; in the middle of the main set, Stay returned after a single show absence. The other change came right at the end of the show after Moment Of Surrender and was much more surprising. U2 seem to have embraced their newfound penchant for playing a song after MOS, tonight performing fan favourite Bad to close the show. This is just the third time it has been performed in 2011, following appearances on 3 April in La Plata and 24 June at the Glastonbury Festival. This is also just the second time Bad has been performed in North America on the entire 360° Tour, bookending the band's jaunts through the US; its other performance was at the tour's first US show back on 12 September 2009.

There was another little morsel for those fans paying close attention; Bono snippeted the title lyric of Two Hearts Beat As One in Vertigo. It has not appeared live in any form, not even snippet, since 27 December 1989. This was in fact its first appearance as a snippet; all 132 previous appearances were full performances.

The complete Pittsburgh setlist was:

U2's Minneapolis setlist, 23/07

Today, U2 performed in Minneapolis. This was the third-last show of the 360° Tour. It was part of the original 2010 itinerary, and when the postponed dates were rescheduled and announced on 13 July 2010, it became the final gig of the tour. However, this status was lost when the Pittsburgh and Moncton gigs were added to the end of the itinerary.

After I Still Haven't Found, the band segued into a full performance of Stand By Me, the fourth time this tour that they have done so. It was performed with hip hop musician K'naan and dedicated to his native Somalia. The next song was Stuck In A Moment, dedicated to the recently deceased Amy Winehouse. Stuck last appeared in a 360° Tour set two weeks ago, although it was actually played live more recently, five days ago on Letterman's show.

The show was a bit of a wet one; consequently, Bono dug out a number of his rain-related snippets. He continues to be especially fond of Singing In The Rain. The full setlist was:

U2's East Rutherford setlist, 20/07

Tonight U2 played in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This is their third stop in the city on the tour following performances on 23 and 24 September 2009. When first announced for 2010 it was scheduled to conclude the tour, but this changed with the rescheduled 2011 itinerary following Bono's back injury.

Several guests were in the house, including Bruce Springsteen and Salman Rushdie. The set featured some alterations from the previous few nights. Magnificent returned after an absence of one show, again being performed in its original iteration. In an insignificant note, a song was snippeted in Stay (Faraway, So Close!) for just the fourth and fifth time ever. The Edge introduced the song in place of Bono but then mistakenly played a few bars of Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of before correcting his error, and a line of In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, popularized by Frank Sinatra in 1955, was included in the final verse. The biggest surprise was reserved for the end of the night. Following Moment of Surrender, U2 launched into Out of Control for just the fifth time on the tour. Two other songs, Bad and 40, were on the printed setlist after Out of Control but were not performed. The former has not been played since 3 April 2011, while the latter has yet to be performed this tour.

The full set was as follows:

U2's St. Louis setlist, 17/07

U2 played their first stadium gig in St Louis (or anywhere in Missouri, for that matter) since 8 November 1997. After switching up the setlist a little for Philadelphia three nights previously, they reverted to the new "usual" set, as last performed in 11 July 2011. This means that The Fly returned to the set after a single show absence, Magnificent disappeared again after its cameo in Philadelphia, and the order of the first half of the main set was somewhat shuffled.

The night after this gig, Bono and Edge appeared on David Letterman's show and performed an acoustic version of Stuck In A Moment. Our database listing for that appearance can be found here. This is U2's first appearance on Letterman since their five show run on the NLOTH Promo Tour.

The full Philadelphia setlist was:

U2's Philadelphia setlist, 14/07

U2's first concert in Philadelphia since the Vertigo Tour saw them modify the setlist a little from the previous show in Toronto. The most notable change was the return of Magnificent, performed for the first time since 17 June 2011. It was also performed in its old form, truer to the album version, rather than the remixed version played in May and June. This boosted the number of songs from No Line On The Horizon back up to four, after nine shows in a row with just three songs from the band's last album. Magnificent's resurrection meant that the 360° Tour's newest star, The Fly, took a leave of absence. To cater for this substitution, the order of the early passage of the main set was modified, with I Will Follow notably appearing second, the spot it held before The Fly's debut.

Bono closed the show by leading the crowd in singing Happy Birthday for Nelson Mandela's forthcoming 93rd birthday. The full setlist was:
