New Orleans to get first U2 show in 20 years

Barely a week ago U2 announced additional dates for the Joshua Tree Tour 2017. A New Orleans date was also rumoured, and today U2.com confirmed it for 14 September at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. This will be the eighth show in the US on the tour's third leg, coming between the two Missouri shows in Kansas City and St Louis. A short cross-state trip has become a much longer trek down to the mouth of the Mississippi and back.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday 16 June at 10am local time. A presale for U2.com subscribers commences tomorrow 13 June, also at 10am local.

This will be just U2's fourth show ever in New Orleans, and their fifth in Louisiana. The last time was on 21 November 1997 during the Popmart Tour, at the same venue as this show. The one time U2 did not play in New Orleans on a Louisiana visit was, funnily enough, on the original Joshua Tree Tour: that tour stopped in Baton Rouge instead, on 26 November 1987. At that show the band filmed the music video for Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) during the soundcheck.

There have, of course, been subsequent off-tour appearances in Louisiana by U2 or members thereof. Most notable is the Super Bowl performance of 3 February 2002. But for Louisiana fans wanting to see the band play a full gig without needing to travel interstate, it's been a long time between drinks.

Our database entry for the forthcoming concert is here.
