U2 to visit Nashville for first time since 1981

The rumours have been confirmed: U2 have added Nashville to the itinerary of the 2011 North American leg of the 360° Tour. The concert will take place on 2 July 2011 at Vanderbilt Stadium. Support will be provided by Florence And The Machine.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, 29 October 2010. U2.com subscribers will, as usual, be able to participate in a presale. It begins at 10am local time on Tuesday, 26 October, i.e. tomorrow. Ticket prices are the same as usual.

Amazingly, despite Nashville's reputation as a music city, this will be just the second concert U2 have ever played there. Their first Nashville concert was way back on the October Tour, 2 December 1981. The gap between that show and next year's is a staggering 29 years and 7 months.

Even outside of Nashville, U2 have rarely visited Tennessee; this will be just their seventh concert in the state (or eighth if you count this drunken appearance in 1982). Their last Tennessee concert was in Memphis on 14 May 1997. That Popmart show was, until now, the only U2 concert in Tennessee in the 23 years since the Joshua Tree Tour. It is worth noting that back on 28 November 1987, they played in Murfreesboro (of all towns!) and famously soundchecked Red Hill Mining Town, a song never performed in concert.
