U2's New Orleans setlist, 14/09/17

Tonight U2 were in New Orleans, Louisiana, their fifth concert in the state. The only time they have visited Louisiana and not played in New Orleans was on the original Joshua Tree tour when they visited Baton Rouge instead. This is their fourth visit to the city on tour, with the most recent concert coming way back on 21 November 1997. Despite the relative dearth of concerts, a fact Bono mentioned during the show, the city is quite close to the hearts of the band, with Edge forming the Music Rising project to help local musicians following Hurricane Katrina.

In that near-twenty year gap various band members have performed in New Orelans four times however; on 3 February 2002 for the Superbowl halftime show as the whole band, on 28 April 2006 at the re-opening of Preservation Hall and the next day at Jazz Fest, both by Edge, and 25 September 2006 at the re-opening of the Superdome with Green Day. This is their fourth time in the Superdome, following PopMart, the Superbowl, and the stadium's re-opening.

Reports from outside before the concert began indicated that Vertigo, With or Without You, and Spanish Eyes were rehearsed, likely by the crew. The first two appeared in the set as normal, Spanish Eyes did not. The Saints Are Coming was fittingly snippeted at the end of Vertigo, with Bono continuing to sing the chorus after the song had concluded. After Ultraviolet, Bono praised Edge for his Music Rising work, handing the microphone over to his bandmate who in turn mentioned the local music scene, name-dropping Trombone Shorty and the Jazz Festival.

You're The Best Thing About Me was moved to after One, seemingly to close a show for the first time. Then in a twist, I Will Follow was performed for the first time on the third leg to actually end the night, the first performance of the song since the final few shows in Europe. Bono remarked that it was the first time Edge had played the song on his Fender Stratocaster instead of his famous Gibson Explorer, saying "Miracles happen in New Orleans!". Accordingly, New Orleans is the first concert on the third leg to surpass 21 songs in the set.
