U2's Glastonbury setlist, 24/06

U2 have been together since 1976. Back in the day when they played festivals regularly during 1980-85, they never made it to Glastonbury. They were even listed for 1982, but this billing was cancelled. Then they took their leave from the festival circuit, appearing only at charity festivals such as Live 8 on 2 July 2005. Finally, they were scheduled to appear at Glastonbury in 2010, but as we all know so well, Bono's back had different ideas. Edge showed up to play a song with Muse, but that obviously was not the same. But here we are in 2011; U2 rescheduled, and it finally happened.

Unsurprisingly, the new setlist order debuted last week at the second Anaheim show was indeed a harbinger of the Glastonbury setlist. The band opened with a barrage of five Achtung Baby songs, and for this appearance, some of these songs were performed complete with visuals reprised from the Zoo TV Tour. This was followed by three older songs recalling the opening sequence from many Joshua Tree and Lovetown Tour shows.

In the second half of the main set, the band deviated from the setlist played at the two most recent 360° Tour shows. Get On Your Boots was played 12th, the latest it has ever appeared in a setlist, and fan favourite Bad was performed live for just the second time this year, following its appearance in La Plata on 3 April 2011. For the last two years, U2 have ended their main sets with Walk On, but tonight the main set was rounded out with Pride instead. This means that the main set closed with the three songs U2 intended to play at Live Aid, in order; back then, Bad ran so long that they had to cut Pride, but there were no such worries this time around.

The set was concluded with a three-song encore. When it is played, Moment Of Surrender is normally the last song of the set - only once previously has it not been the closer (when U2 played Saturday Night Live on 26 September 2009). Tonight, however, it was just the second song of the encore, introduced with a lengthy snippet of Coldplay's Yellow. U2 instead finished the night by cranking out their very first single, Out Of Control. It has only been played twice previously this year.

In total, U2 played 19 songs. Perhaps surprisingly, this did not include the unreleased song U2 wrote (and performed seven times) last year, Glastonbury. The full setlist was:
